ecoSPEARS Selected for Prestigious Clean Water Accelerator to Tackle Global Water Crisis

Life on Earth – as we know it – is primarily propagated by the presence of one molecular compound: water. Every human civilization in recorded history has been founded either on or near a major body of water, be it a river, lake, or ocean coastline. Clean water, or rather access to clean water, is a human necessity. Yet even today, with our societies as technologically advanced and globally connected as they have ever been, 1 in 3 people worldwide remain without access to clean water. This is no mere issue. This is a global humanitarian crisis.

According to a collaborative report from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)over 2 billion people around the world lack basic access to clean drinking waterWith these statistics in mind, it should come as no surprise that no less than 3 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are directly or indirectly tied to the matter of access to clean water. These SDGs include goals for clean drinking water & sanitation, sustainable cities, air quality, life on land, and life underwater among others.

The start of a new decade marks only 10 years to go until the deadline is met for the SDGs. To help meet these goals, thousands of organizations around the world have committed to fostering growth for innovative and sustainable technologies. One such organization is Imagine H2O (IH2O)a mission-driven non-profit that supports startups and people develop and deploy their technologies and solutions to solve global water issues. One vehicle IH2O utilizes to drive this mission is through its annual Clean Water Accelerator program.

IH2O announced earlier this month the thirteen companies chosen – from over 215 applicants across 33 countries – to participate in this year’s Accelerator program. Included in this year’s cohort is Orlando-based startup ecoSPEARS, a clean technology company with the exclusive license of NASA-developed environmental technology capable of removing the world’s most persistent toxic chemicals from contaminated land and waterways.

“We are incredibly excited to be a part of this year’s Imagine H2O Accelerator program,” said Ian Doromal, Co-founder and Executive Vice President of ecoSPEARS. “We are fortunate to have been selected for a number of cleantech accelerator and incubator programs, including Port of San Diego’s Blue Economy Incubator, Cleantech Open and Black & Veatch’s Cleantech IgniteXWeWork’s and the Washington State Maritime Blue Accelerator, but Imagine H2O will be the first program that ecoSPEARS is a part of with the exclusive focus on clean water technology.”

The Imagine H2O Accelerator will take place from January  October 2020 with the thirteen cohort companies assembling in San Francisco this coming March for Water Innovation Week which will include a Demo Day and pitch to judges on March 25th. Pitch winners will be announced on the following day’s Gala event.

“Each year, our industry continues to spend billions of dollars on costly and destructive cleanup methods, particularly dredging, landfilling, and incineration,” said Doromal, “ which cost parties billions of dollars, cause disruption to affected communities, and risk unrepairable damage to sensitive species and wildlife habitats. ecoSPEARS exists to challenge the status quo in the environmental industry because we know that when people are given access to clean water, they’re able to live better and healthier lives.”

ecoSPEARS boasts alumni status to some of the world’s most prestigious cleantech accelerator programs, including the Port of San Diego Blue Economy Incubator Program, the Black & Veatch IgniteX AcceleratorCleantech Open, and the Port of Seattle Maritime Blue Accelerator prior to joining the 2020 IH2O cohort. The Port of Seattle Maritime Blue Accelerator – prior to IH2O – was the most recent clean water Accelerator program ecoSPEARS was enlisted into. Last summer, ecoSPEARS was selected as a one-of-one cohort for the Port of San Diego’s Blue Economy Incubator 2019 program, culminating in a 2-year deployment of its namesake Sorbent Polymer Extraction And Remediation System (SPEARS) technology within San Diego Bay.

It’s time to accelerate the adoption of green and sustainable technologies to solve the world’s most pressing issues – clean water being perhaps the most important one,” said ecoSPEARS Co-founder and CEO Sergie Serg Albino. “Clean water is a human right. Every person deserves access to clean water. Being a part of this year’s IH2O Accelerator and WA Maritime cohort will help us spread the message that a solution finally exists to clean the most persistent toxins from the sediment layer of waterways while protecting the sensitive aquatic ecosystems in the process.”

IH2O and ecoSPEARS are but two entities seeking to accelerate worldwide sustainability through innovation as the SDGs’ 2030 deadline creeps ever closer. These goals include eliminating poverty and hunger, delivering clean water and sanitation, clean energy, sustainable communities, and innovation for industry and infrastructure to name a few. Arguably the most important SDG is the final one, #17: Partnerships For The Goals. Without solid and strategic partnerships to meet the 2030 deadline, the global crisis of access to clean water will remain without an end in sight.

About ecoSPEARS: At ecoSPEARS, we envision a world where every human being has access to clean food, clean water, and clean air. ecoSPEARS is committed to creating a better future by providing cost-effective, green solutions to usher in the carbonless future of environmental cleanup.
